Though the title may look slightly fishy, I am not going to write something controversial. Taking inspiration from the quotation of Pope Francis (shepherds with the smell of the sheep) and definitely from the life of Jesus, the God who became human, I have 2 thoughts for Christmas.
- Invitation to have the smell of the shepherd. Jesus knew the smell of his Father. The invitation is equally valid for us.
- Invitation to have the smell of the sheep (All of us are leaders/ shepherds in some form or the other. It is important to know the sheep (not just intellectually, but in a deeply human way)
I think the mistake done by Christians over the centuries is to understand the word ‘smell’ metaphorically. The word is understood in a much casual manner and it is limited to our stories of Christmas (not even in the crib). I think a literal understanding of the word ‘Smell’ (what it means is for You and Me to think) would make Christmas having a little more the authentic smell of Jesus, the God who became human.
Merry Christmas to all of you….
