Other as Persons

Today we celebrate the beautiful Hindu feast of rakshabandan, a feast where the love and relationship between a brother and sister is exhorted. Both prays for each other, expresses their love and care for the other. According to the traditional understanding, guy promises to protect the girl. Probably a better way would be a promise to respect the girl. Today’s time and age demands from us, moving beyond own brothers and sisters. It is an invitation for each guy to see each girl as a person to be cared for, and not to be considered as an object. I know it is easy to preach, but celebrations like this should help us to make this wish/dream a possibility.

Let’s not limit the celebration to our own sisters and friends, but extend that hand of love to the entire humanity.
